The Ancient Spartans Had a Murderous Secret Police
If 300 taught us anything, its that the Spartans were a hardy and courageous group. But they werent the nicest to their own people, punishing young people brutally for infractions, and even utilizing the youth as a secret service! Meet the krypteia, a sort of Hitler Youth of Sparta. When a Training Procedure Goes Really,à Really Wrong According to ancient sources, the krypteia were as vicious as they came. Its members were chosen for their discretion and probably their hardiness, intelligence, and resourcefulness. As Plato has Megillus recount in hisà Laws,à Spartan youths underwent training, widely prevalent amongst us, in hardy endurance of pain in the form of beatings, but it was the krypteia that was the most brutal of all. That kind of work was a wonderfully severe training. So what was their deal? Apparently, the idea for the krypteia mightve come from theà laws of Lycurgus,à the king of Spartan legalese; his reforms were, according toà Plutarch,à efficacious in producing valour, but defective in producing righteousness.à Writes Plutarch: I certainly cannot ascribe to Lycurgus so abominable a measure as the ââ¬Ëkrypteia,ââ¬â¢ judging of his character from his mildness and justice in all other instances. Over time, the krypteiaà evolvedà from a form of uber-advanced fitness training to a sort-of-secretà guerrillaà force. The group appears to have had some representation in the mainstream Spartan army, as well; in Plutarchsà Cleomenes, a fellow named Damocles is given the title of commander of the secret service contingent. Butà Damoteles doesnt getà the greatest rep - he was bribed to betray his own people toà the enemy - and the people he represented seem to have been even worse. The organization of the krypteia seems to have been in direct opposition to the regular hoplites inà the Spartan army, as if the very way it was set up made it different of special. The hoplites were organized, fought in a phalanx, and worked as a team; in contrast, the krypteia fought in secret, went out inà irregular groups and missions, and stayed away from Sparta proper, working and living onà the frontier. The Bad,à the Worst, and theà Really Ugly As Plutarch tells it, the Spartan leaders would periodically send the young men of the krypteia out into the country at large. What for, you might ask? The young soldiers would hide themselves until they came across groups of people called helots.à At night, they came down into the highways and killed every Helot whom they caught. Even during the day, the krypteia massacredà the helots working in the fields. Theà Ephors, the leaders of Sparta, made formal declaration of war upon the helots, in order that there might be no impiety in slaying them. Perhaps, as some scholars have theorized, serving in the krypteia allows soldiers to practice stealth and cunning .But what the krypteia did was basically state-sanctioned massacre! Who were the helots? Why did the Spartan magistrates commission their young warriors to kill them? The helots were serfs owned by the Spartan state, basically slaves; the Roman historian Livy claims that they were a race of rustics, who have been feudal vassals even from the earliest times.à The krypteia was a force the government utilized to keep the helots in their place,à accordingà to Brandon D. Ross.à Aristotle discusses the helots in hisà Politics, saying that the mere necessity of policing a serf class is an irksome burden. What freedoms do you give them? How much leewayà shouldà they get? he asks. The relationship between the Spartans and the helots was fractious at best. Once upon a time, the people of Spartan-ruled Messenia and the helots revolted against the Lacedaemonian lords. They tookà advantage of the chaos that ensued after the earthquakes of 464 B.C., but that didnt work, and the Spartans kept up their cruel treatment.à How else did the Spartans torture the helots? Heres our pal Plutarch: For instance, they would force them to drink too much strong wine, and then introduce them into their public messes, to show the young men what a thing drunkenness was. They also ordered them to sing songs and dance dances that were low and ridiculous, but to let the nobler kind alone. The Spartan torture of the Helots wasnt a one-time thing. On one occasion, Livy recounts how, being charged with an intention to desert, they were driven with stripes through all the streets, and put to death. Another time, two thousand helots mysteriously disappeared in a possible act of genocide; then, on a different occasion, a bunch of helots were suppliants at the minor Temple of Poseidon Taenarius, but were seized from that sacred spot. That kind of sacrilege - violating the sanctuary of a temple - was as awful as it got; the right of asylum was a truly valued one. Shame on Sparta!

The Importance Of Stereotypes On Society - 911 Words
Harper Lee, an American novelist, once wrote, ââ¬Å"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of viewâ⬠(User). We as humans are very quick to judge; hence, in our eyes others are portrayed by outward appearances and not on their background or what they are going through. Stereotypes do nothing but hurt the world, whereas it would be a much better place if we were all united as one and stereotypes didnt exist. Stereotypes can be defined as viewing an entire group of people in a generalized way, and they impact our society in many ways (Stereotype). For example, in an interview with Guy Raz from NPR, Jamila Lyiscott says, ââ¬Å"You have this lens where youre looking at yourself through the lens of other peopleâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In addition, in the story, ââ¬Å"Desireeââ¬â¢s Baby,â⬠stereotypes are explained and shown how they affect society. Readers notice that making judgements about a particular person or group of p eople that you may not know knowledge about, can never be good or end well. Sometimes we as people are quick to judge based on outward appearance, and we care what others opinion of ourselves is. In reality your opinion of you is the only one that matters. Without a doubt, developing stereotypes is not a good habit to have. To reveal that going down the path of developing labels isnt good, the author writes, ââ¬Å"She walked across a deserted field, where the stubble bruised her tender feet, so delicately shod, and tore her thin gown to shredsâ⬠(Chopin). This helps support the definition of stereotypes by revealing that Desiree began to view herself through the false stereotype others had defined her as. Labels and stereotypes affect society in a negative way, they decrease self-confidence, and once you know that stereotype you sometimes view yourself that way and look at yourself as less than. Stereotypes and discrimination affect everyone, even athletes. Jackie Robin son, born in the south in the 1900s, broke barriers, set records, and ultimately left an impact on many athletes to come. Week 1 ââ¬â DQ Identify economic factors that affect the real GDP, the unemployment rate, the inflation rate, and a key interest rate. How do you predict the economy will perform in the next two years given the current state of two of the economic factors you identified? How might your organization be affected by these changes? Response #1 There are many factors that affect the real GDP such as interest rates, consumers confidence in spending and/or asset prices. When it comes to interest rates, the lower the rate the less expensive it is to borrow, which encourages spending. For example, those individuals who have a mortgage to pay will have a lower payment; however, when there is a low to no interest rate, it leaves lendersâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As people spend more money, the demand for money also grows. When money is in high demand, the Government lowers interest rates, thus creating access to more funds by more people and more goods will be sold. Consumption is a good indicator of consumer confidence, which means people feel secure about the future and dont mind spending their money on more frivolous things. When consumer confidence is low, people hold onto their money and dont spend as much. I feel that if Americans are confident about their jobs and their future that their consumption will continue to in crease and the economy will gradually start to rebound. If , however, they are not confident then consumption will go own and the economy will grow stagnant or get worse. Our founding fathers wanted our nation to be an educated nation. There were many who believed that only a chosen should be educated, but there were those who saw education to be more pervasive. During the 1800s Horace Mann revolutionized the ideas with public education; however, today we now face an education system lacking in religious classes, group projects, and outside stimulation. Business Law for Negligence - Liability and Damages- myassignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about theBusiness Law for Negligence,Liability and Damages. Answer: Facts of case A temporary ride, Chair-o-lift was set up by the Mid Show organizers at Paynesville as they did at the previous year's show. Yiming urged Fatima to join him as he had been on such rides several times before. When they purchased the tickets, the attendant forgot to tell them but he did get both of them to sign the tickets. Yiming and Fatima did not paid attention towards the terms and conditions of the tickets before signing the tickets assuming the information to be as ordinary as in case of any other ordinary tickets. On the central pylon, there was a notice with terms and conditions of travelling on the chair-o-lift; however, it was partly covered by some advertising posters. During getting ready to get off from the chair-o-lift, Yiming's foot got caught in the strap and he fell about two metres off the platform and got severely injured. Yiming wishes to sue the organizers of the show for his injuries and organizers argue that they are not liable because of exclusion clause at the back side of the ticket and the notice on the central pylon as well. Issues raised by the facts The issue here is that that whether Yiming can successfully sue the show organizers for the injuries caused to him or not? Relevant legal principles Contract law of Australia is applicable in this case. In this context, it has been explained in paragraph 1 of Law Hand Book, that a contract is considered as an agreement between two people with offer and acceptance, intention to form a legally binding agreement, paid, legal ability to enter a contract with a free will, and proper consideration and permission of what is implicated.[1] It has been explained in the paragraph 3 of ACL that the contract can be considered as illegal and void because of false statements, threat or constraint, excessive influence, or unconscionable dealings.[2] For the purpose of a contract, an offer made by one party must be accepted by the other party. An offer must be distinguished from just a deal or negotiation. An offer is considered as a promise that is required to be bound in a case the offer is accepted. It has been described in the statutory prohibition category of Contract law in ACCL that an offer can be withdrawn before the order is accepted, for which, the offer must be communicated.[3] Acceptance of the offer occurs when the party agrees to the offer through statement or act. It has been explained in paragraph 4 of Law Hand Book that acceptance must be explicit and communicated to the offer because it has not been expressly rejected.[4] As per the Contract law of Australia, it becomes possible to claim compensation for various kinds of injuries received while driving or at work, as a sufferer of crime, or when a person who has the liability of care did careless or dangerous acts and caused the injury and it has been specified in page 169 of Shodhganga also.[5] Negligence should be established because the cause of injury, responsibility, consent, and the conduct of parties, and the predictability of the injury are taken into consideration by the court in such cases as mentioned in Negligence and injury section of Law Hand Book.[6] Taking into consideration, the points of agreement, express terms are stated to be in writing or speech. In case of written contract, the assumption is that the document must contain all the terms and conditions of the contract as mentioned in 2nd paragraph of Express terms of contract.[7] Application of relevant legal principles to the facts Contract law of Australia is applicable in this case because providing a ticket and get it signed by the other party can be considered as entering into a contract. As a contract is considered as an agreement between the two parties with offer and acceptance of each other, it establishes the intention of both the parties to form a legally binding agreement, for which the party entering into the contract has paid the ticket prices, and entered into the contract with a free will, and proper consideration and permission of what has been implicated. For the purpose of a contract, an offer made by one party must be accepted by the other party and Yiming has entered into the contract with the organizers by showing acceptance by signing the contract. The offer was distinguished as the attendant got the ticket signed by both of them. However, it was negligence on the part of attendant that he forgot to tell them that the conditions of using the chair-o-lift were printed on the ticket. Thus, it can be analysed that there was lack of effective communication between the two parties, particularly from the side of attendant. Acceptance of the offer occurs when the party agrees to the offer through statement or act and it is well established that Yiming and Fatima signed the tickets, which exhibits their total consent to agree to the terms and conditions of the contract. In order to convert the agreement into contractual form, they have paid an appropriate amount of charges for purchasing the tickets, which establishes their consent to the contract. Acceptance must be explicit and communicated to the offer but in this case, both of them took the information on the ticket negligently and assumed it simply as their entry tickets. As per the Contract law of Australia, Yiming can claim compensation for the injuries he received as a sufferer, or when an attendant who has the liability of care acted careless which became the reason of injury. However, to sue a company considering their negligence is required to be established as the cause of injury, liability, consent, and the conduct of parties, and the predictability of the injury are taken into consideration by the court in such cases as mentioned in 1st paragraph of Negligence section in Law Book.[8] If the points of contract are taken into consideration, express terms are stated to be in writing or speech, which was clearly stated by the organizing party in the printed form in the ticket as mentioned in 3rd paragraph on page 5 of the report.[9] In addition to it, the ticket contains all the terms and conditions along with the exclusion clause at the back side of the ticket. It establishes their seriousness towards the contract and their legal binding with the procedures as mentioned in 6th paragraph on page 13 of the report.[10] Tentative Conclusion After analysing the rules in Australia and their applicability to the case, it can be concluded that the acts done by both the parties are negligent. The organizers have acted negligently as their attendant did not explained the rules to Yiming and Fatima before getting the ticket signed, in order to keep the communication effective to enter into the contract. However, he got the tickets signed by both of them without telling them the conditions. Yiming and Fatima are also at fault because they have signed the ticket without examining it inside out assuming that it was simply an entry ticket. It becomes their responsibility to examine the document whatever it is carefully, before signing it for a purpose. Above all, they have seen the notice in the central pylon but, it was faded and partially covered by some advertisements. The organizers claimed that there was an exclusion clause at the back of the ticket but, it was not informed to the injured party and the notice on the central p ylon contained the same exclusion clause, which was faded and partially covered. It shows greater degree of negligence on the part of organizers and their liability towards the people who might suffer severe injuries just like Yiming due to their acts. Therefore, Yiming can sue the show organizers but, he will also be considered as negligent because of the lack of reasonable conduct before entering into the contract. If I was wealthy I would be happy because I can buy everything I want, and help the poor. That alone brings me great happiness =) But really who wouldnt want to be wealthy? If it was there for the taking I bet everyone will like to be wealthy. I mean you can be just as happy living without wealth, than living with wealth. Money can be a great friend, but at the same time an enemy. If money can solve a problem, it isnt a problem. The real problem is money. I agree that you could be successful if you work really hard youre whole life to become something such as a doctor, lawyer, scientist, inventor, etc. , and end up earning a lot of money. Even some actors/actresses, singers, and dancersà work hard in acting, music, or danceà school in order to become a successful actor/actress, singer, or dancer. omewhat but it also means finding happiness but to really make it in this world, you need money so money money money = success in life. I know money is not everything but everything is need money is not a priority but it still very important. Im sorry in advance but i dont believe when people say success and happiness is not about money. Money is important and quite almost everything, No matter how pretty your girlfriend are you haved, and no matter how many friends are you haved, YOU ARE NOT SUCCEED!. Succeed mean you have a lot of money on you and your income keep increasing at the same time. it useless to have money if you dont know how to earn it, only know how to use it. in the end even a gold mountain will finish if you just know how to take it but not earn it. investing and hardwork and smart thinking of business are the key, if people only know hardwork they wont have progress, they only be a labor for money at the last It doesnt necessarily mean money but its pretty dang useful. money is important to satisfies your needs and this satisfaction is temporary. I say its temporary because us humans are needy people, we want more and more. Of course money is good if it is used properly such as helping those in need. Money is a big help and does make life a lot easier, but it is not the most important thing. The most important thing is Happiness with you, your family and everyone else. In Cambridge dictionary, successful is defined as: ââ¬Å"having achieved a lot, become popular and made a lot of moneyâ⬠. I don`t agree with you that happiness will never be bought. Can you imagine if you are a homeless man and you live in poverty, will you be happy? To my mind with the help of money people can become happier because due to money all basic physical needs are satisfied; for such people it is enough to have any shelter, warmth, available food or water supply, and they could feel safety. In these situations, money absolutely will make you happier. money can buy things which bring happiness, and in that sense, yes it can buy happiness. but then again it also depends on each individuals definition of happiness. it may buy one person happiness yet bring another nothing. money is not everything but it makes you everything. nd you can observe this difference in real life. a rich man has a strength in his life that you could not see in a middle class or poor man. So, it shows money has power.. First of all, not all writers are reach or have normal condition of life. What about goals achievement? Yes in that case I am agree with you that people who reach their dream or life aims are successful. All of us dream to achieve our goals and beco me successful. What the word successful means for majority of us? Of course becoming very rich or have big amounts of money. Therefore, I think that MONEY-SUCCESS. Money is the thing, by the help of which we can buy everything, and even popularity!!!!! I know a lot of people who have different conditions of life. People who are rich they are successful. They pay for everything; for education, or even for their health. Why i mention the issue about health? Majority of us thinks that healthy people are successful. Yes it`s right. But we must pay attention to the fact that rich people are more healthy, because they pay for it; they can buy any expensive medicine in order to avoid different kinds of illnesses. Now what about the title of my debate Money-success or why i choose it? we must thing about the fact that we can buy everything if we are rich; health, knowledge and everything what we wants!!!! It is unquestionable that there have been many popular people that did not have enough money. They have achieved a lot but they have no fortune. Are these people successful? According to the definition, they are not successful. Being successful is about achieving a lot, becoming popular and having a lot of money. How much do we know about people who have achieved a lot yet they do not have any money? How much do we know about people who have a lot of money and yet they have not achieved as much as those popular-but-poor people? Our knowledge of both categories is incomparable. Media seems to give a lot of attention to the well-off not to the badly-off. If one wants to be successful in the eyes of people, then earning money is paramount here. The meaning of being successful has changed. It is no longer like in days gone by. Nowadays, celebrities are the most successful people. But what do they really do to deserve that? Endorsed products that they have never tried? Celebrities in my opinion do nothing for the colossal amount of money they get. They are not really successful if we want to tackle the real meaning of success here. Yet the media shows them as being the most successful people on earth. The only reason is that celebrities earn huge amounts of money. If one goes around saying that success does not go hand in hand with money, people would think that s/he lacks in the brain department. Life has become very difficult and people no longer have that kind of mind set. Wage-earners are struggling everyday. You need to earn more to stay alive in this dog-eat-dog world. Why do teenagers want to be models? And why young boys want to be soccer players? It is because such people earn a lot of money while doing nothing. If modeling and soccer were not breeding grounds for huge amounts of money, no one would care about them. Success goes hand in hand with money. This is the sad truth. For the media and people in general, celebrities are very successful even though they do not achieve important things. Poor people will not be successful in the eyes of the media and people even if they achieve a lot. The only difference between them is money. It is what success is about these days. Money became as problems solvers. There are some examples: you are ill, pay more money, because you will have more pills for recovery. You need a job, pay money-you will have a job, even on the high level, though you graduated from university and not have enough experience. You want to eat, pay money for products. What else Everything depends on money. Money surrounds us. On the contrary, success starts from money, but development depends on persons skills, does not it? As an example- you paid money and what? As well you paid, as you can be dismissed from job, because you did not anything at all and you are unprofessional. You should know that money cannot solve all problems. It can only facilitate, but the working process do not face with money. People get used to think that easy money comes easily. It is a mistake. Easy money comes easily and goes away the same. If you want to be convinced that it is look at Beyonce Knowles. She is RnB singer. Have a look at her concerts. She works hard, making a lot of efforts by physical activity. She uses physical efforts. Others use mental efforts, for instance scientists. Cannot they get money by making new innovations and discovering new things? Art and science are important aspects in peoples lives. Money can help us to succeed, but it also can turn us into predators. We should control ourselves and an itch for making more money
